Watch for our week-long celebration of Indigenous culture and content May 26-30th! Horticulture students will host short tours of a new native plant garden featuring culturally important plants with Block A guided tour sign-ups available, and our Kelsey Cafe will feature culturally important wild foods on the menu that same week. There will also be a bannock roast outdoors with class sign-ups available, and textiles students will showcase some form of traditional art. BC Wildfire Service has partnered with School District 79 Careers to offer a FREE training opportunity for students interested in a career as a Wildfire fighter! See the Careers Centre for more details or read below: The course offering is for S-100/S-185, the required certificates for employment with a wildfire crew in British Columbia. The course is 16 hours over two days split between the classroom and the field. The course focuses on equipment and safe work practices as well as fire suppression training. They are looking for spectacular people for an amazing opportunity! The training dates are Monday, May 5th and Friday, May 9th from 8am to 4pm at the Cobble Hill Wildfire Base, 3825 Wiebe Frontage Rd. Requirements: A desire to work as a wildfire fighter, Grade 12, minimum L driver’s licence, physically fit and able to perform hard physical work, good attendance at school, reliable, two teacher (or one teacher and a coach) references, approval by school administration, submit a resume outlining, at least, the above requirements and your cell phone contact number to clauridsen@sd79.bc.ca , please make sure that the subject line is “BC Wildfire”.
