Library, Textbooks & Equipment Policies

TEXTBOOKS AND EQUIPMENT (otherwise known as RESOURCES) POLICY:

Students pay a $25 textbook deposit when they first come to Frances Kelsey. If there is nothing outstanding when students graduate, this fee will be used to defray graduation expenses. If they leave before graduation, the fee is refunded once all textbooks and equipment have been returned to the school in reasonable condition. Further charges are assessed for lost or damaged books, equipment or resources as circumstances arise. Charges are generated based on replacement cost and not the original purchase price of the resource.

Textbooks are loaned out for the year or for the semester, depending on whether the course is linear or not, and are due back on the last day of scheduled classes in that time period, in a condition that only reflects basic wear and tear. Books that come back with mould, stains, ripped or missing pages or covers, or in a condition that renders it unable to be lent out again, will be thrown out and replacement cost will be charged to the student account for whom it was signed out that semester or year. It is also recommended that when a student returns a textbook they do not just throw it in the bin but wait to confirm that the book being returned is actually the same one signed out to them. Often books are shared during classes and accidentally switched, but students are responsible for returning the specific book that was signed out in their name, not just any copy of the textbook. A book is considered lost if it is not returned within 45 days after it is due and a fine, due and payable immediately, is automatically applied to the student account. If the book is returned in good condition before the fine is paid, the fine will automatically be deleted. Should the book be found and returned after a fine has been paid, as long as it is within 30 days of the fine application date, a refund will be issued.

Technology (including cameras, laptops, iPads, tablets, etc.) are loaned for part or all of the school day and are to be returned to the library or front office before the final bell of the school day. They are NOT TO BE TAKEN OFF SCHOOL PREMISES or used outside the school buildings. The only exception are cameras if a student is in Yearbook/Journalism 11/12 and they are needed to shoot sport or club events after school hours. If a student is regularly late returning, does not return and just leaves the technology somewhere around the school unattended, or takes the technology off premises, they will lose the future privilege of borrowing any technology. If the technology comes back damaged or not in good working order, the student may be charged up to a $500 replacement cost.  Similarly, if a student vandalizes  technology in a classroom space, including but not limited to desktop computers and TVs, due to inappropriate behaviour or lack of responsibility, the student may be charged up to a $500 replacement cost.

LIBRARY BOOK POLICY:

Library Books are loaned out for a two (2) week period and there is a limit of 10 books at one time. Students are welcome to renew books up to three (3) times unless there is a hold on it by another student. Books are to be returned in a condition that only reflects basic wear and tear. Books that come back with mould, stains, ripped or missing pages or covers, or in a condition that renders it unable to be lent out again, will be thrown out and replacement cost will be charged to the student account for whom it was signed out. Students are responsible for returning the specific book that was signed out in their name, not just any copy of the book.  A library book is considered lost if it is not returned or renewed within 30 days after it is due and a fine, due and payable immediately, is automatically applied to the student account. If the book is returned in good condition before a fine is paid, the fine will automatically be deleted. Should the book be returned after the fine has been paid, as long as it is within 30 days of the fine application date, a refund will be issued.

We welcome recommendations for our collection and ask that students let either the library clerk or the Teacher Librarian know what book they would like to see ordered.

LOCKS AND LOCKERS

Locks and lockers are the property of the school. Students will be assigned a lock and a locker when they have paid their student activity fees. Lockers or locks may not be changed without permission from the main office. It is each student’s responsibility to keep lockers clean and tidy. Nothing permanent can be attached to a locker. Combinations should not be shared. Students will be billed $10 for damaged or missing locks at the end of the year. Report problems with locks or lockers to the main office.
